Geological Information
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, a halide mineral that crystallizes in the cubic system, and it is the defining mineral for Mohs hardness 4. Its colour is highly variable, from purple, green and blue to yellow and clear, with banding produced by trace impurities, rare earth elements and natural irradiation affecting electron defect centres during growth; the colour zoning reflects successive growth phases. The word fluorescence derives from fluorite, the first mineral observed to glow under ultraviolet light. Dyed fluorite exists, and artificially enhanced colour tends to be more uniformly saturated and to lack natural zoning, whereas this Grade B material shows the natural inclusions and uneven colour of untreated stone. Fluorite was used as a carving material in ancient Egypt, Rome and China, and English Blue John fluorite from Derbyshire has been mined for over 300 years. This material is sourced primarily from China, with further deposits in Mexico, South Africa, the USA, the UK, Germany and Argentina.
