Howlite is a calcium borosilicate of the monoclinic system with a low Mohs hardness of 3.5, forming as irregular nodules with a characteristic white chalky appearance and grey veining. It was named after the Canadian mineralogist Henry How, who first described it in 1868. Its absorbent surface takes dye readily, which has made dyed howlite a common simulant for turquoise and other stones, though this material is the natural undyed white form. Its sources include the USA, primarily California, and Canada.
