Picasso Jasper is a metamorphic marble rather than a true silica-based jasper, a calcium carbonate marble with graphite and iron oxide, giving it a soft Mohs hardness of 3 to 4. Its black, grey, brown, and cream colouring with bold abstract linear markings comes from graphite and iron oxide deposits in the marble. It is a natural, untreated material, and the trade name is widely established. Origins: Utah in the USA is the classic source; this material is supplied from Madagascar.
