Rainbow Moonstone is sold universally under this trade name but is technically a white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar, rather than true orthoclase moonstone, with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5 and a monoclinic structure. Its white to colourless body carries a vivid blue adularescent flash, caused by light diffraction between lamellar albite and orthoclase layers, and that blue flash is typically stronger and more vivid than in traditional cream moonstone. The effect and market positioning are identical to moonstone, and the distinction is noted here for informed customers. India is the primary commercial source, with additional material from Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
