Geological Information
Black Onyx is a chalcedony variety in the quartz family, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7. Onyx is properly a banded chalcedony with alternating black and white bands, but almost all commercial black onyx is natural grey or banded chalcedony colour-treated to a deep, even black using the sugar-acid or iron-nitrate process standardized in the Idar-Oberstein agate trade from the nineteenth century onward; the treatment is stable and permanent. Onyx has been used since antiquity across Greek, Roman, Mesopotamian and Egyptian cultures, carved into cameos, intaglios and amulets, and the black variety in particular has featured in European mourning jewellery and in protective talismans across many traditions. It is one of the most continuously used black gemstones in recorded history. The material is sourced mainly from Brazil, with further supply from India and historically from Idar-Oberstein in Germany.
AuturaSol Standard
Each natural stone is selected for its authenticity, geological integrity, and energetic clarity. Natural variations in colour, structure, inclusions, and surface features are inherent to geological materials and contribute to the individuality of each piece. Any known treatments, enhancements, stabilization, or man-made characteristics are clearly disclosed within the product information where applicable. Every piece is inspected and photographed to reflect its true character; however, lighting conditions, screen settings, and natural variation may cause slight differences in appearance. If you have any questions about a piece before completing your purchase, we're always here to help. Where authenticity meets beauty, we tell you exactly what you're holding.
