Blue Onyx is a trade name commonly used for dyed blue calcite rather than true chalcedony onyx. It is composed mainly of calcium carbonate with a soft Mohs hardness of about 3, and the blue colour is produced by dyeing pale calcite, the industry standard for this material; the colour is generally stable. Here the surface is finished with a matte rather than glossy polish. Because it is calcite rather than quartz-based onyx, it is significantly softer than true onyx. The base material is sourced primarily from Brazil, with further material from India.
