Petrified Wood is a silicified fossil, a silicon dioxide pseudomorph with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal crystal system, formed when ancient wood is gradually replaced by silica molecule by molecule while preserving the original cellular structure. The process occurs over millions of years in silica-rich groundwater, and in opalised material the wood is replaced by hydrated silica, which can give a softer, more translucent appearance. The trees of the Arizona Petrified Forest date to the Triassic period, approximately 225 million years old, and the material has been recognised across many cultures as a connection to ancient time, held as sacred by Native American traditions of the Southwest.
