Geological Information
Pyrite is iron sulphide (FeS2), a sulphide mineral that crystallises in the cubic system to form well-known cubic, pyritohedral and octahedral crystals, with a Mohs hardness of about 6 to 6.5. Its brass-yellow colour and bright metallic lustre are the source of the name Fool's Gold, though the cubic crystal habit is a reliable way to tell it from real gold. The name comes from the Greek pyr, meaning fire, because pyrite produces sparks when struck against metal or stone, and it was used as a fire-starting material across many early cultures. Polished pyrite was also worked into mirrors by Aztec and Inca cultures, and such mirrors have been recovered archaeologically. This is natural, untreated material. It is sourced primarily from Spain, with further material from Peru, Italy, Bolivia and the USA.
