Rose Quartz is the pink variety of quartz, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7, its colour from trace titanium, iron or manganese, or from microscopic pink fibre inclusions of dumortierite or similar minerals. It occurs in two forms, the common massive rose quartz coloured by those fibre inclusions and the rarer clear rose quartz crystals coloured by trace elements; star rose quartz shows a six-rayed asterism when cut as a cabochon. It was used in ancient Egypt and Rome as a love token, found in Egyptian cosmetic contexts and Roman burial sites. Sources include Brazil, Madagascar, India, South Africa and the USA.
