Geological Information
Selenite is a crystalline variety of gypsum, calcium sulphate with a soft Mohs hardness of 2 to 2.5 and a fibrous, striated structure with a silky lustre; this is the warm orange variety. Its name comes from Selene, the Greek moon goddess, for its soft luminous quality, and thin selenite slabs were used as window material in ancient Rome before glass was common. Mexico's Cave of the Crystals contains selenite crystals over 10 metres long, among the largest ever recorded. This is natural, untreated material, sourced from Morocco, with selenite also found in Mexico, the USA and Poland.
