Sunstone is a feldspar variety with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, named for the warm orange to red-brown colour and metallic shimmer it shows, an effect called aventurescence caused by tiny platelet inclusions of hematite or goethite catching the light. Oregon Sunstone, found in volcanic flows in Harney County, is the official state gemstone of Oregon and occurs in clear, yellow, orange, red and rare bicolour forms.
