Geological Information
Topaz is an aluminium silicate fluoride of the orthorhombic system and one of the hardest silicate minerals at Mohs 8, with perfect basal cleavage. Natural colourless topaz is common, while the desirable blue is almost entirely the result of treatment. Virtually all commercial blue topaz, including this material, is produced by irradiation followed by heat treatment, a standard and regulated industry practice that yields stable, safe material; this treated origin is disclosed here. Topaz has been used in jewellery since antiquity, though the blue variety specifically is an enhancement product of the late 20th century. This material is sourced from Brazil, with further deposits in Sri Lanka and Nigeria.

Care Note
Although hard at Mohs 8, topaz has perfect basal cleavage and can split if struck sharply along that plane. Avoid hard knocks and store it apart from other stones.
