Black Tourmaline, known mineralogically as schorl, is an iron sodium borosilicate of the tourmaline group with a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5, taking its black colour from high iron content. Schorl is the most abundant tourmaline variety and is found globally in granites and metamorphic rocks, and it is a natural, untreated material. Sources include Brazil, the United States, several African countries, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
