Unakite, frequently sold as Unakite Jasper in the trade, is a metamorphic rock with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7, composed of three minerals in consistent proportion: pink orthoclase feldspar, clear quartz, and green epidote. The pink comes entirely from the feldspar and the green from the epidote, with the quartz appearing as glassy colourless zones between them, which is why the colouring is patchy and irregular rather than banded. It takes its name from the Unaka Mountains of North Carolina, where it was first identified. Despite the trade name, it is a granite-based metamorphic rock rather than a true jasper, and the jasper label is a commercial habit rather than an accurate identification. The material is natural and requires no treatment. There is no distinct ancient tradition attached to it. Documented sources include the USA, South Africa, Brazil, and China; the origin stated for this material is Canada.
