Geological Information
Moonstone is a member of the feldspar family, a potassium aluminium silicate with a hardness of 6 to 6.5, whose glowing floating blue light, called adularescence, is caused by light scattering between thin alternating layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar that form during cooling. The finest blue adularescence in transparent material comes from Sri Lanka, and the phenomenon is named after Adularia, a moonstone locality in the Swiss Alps. Romans believed moonstone was formed from solidified moonbeams, and it was used prominently in Art Nouveau jewellery. The material is sourced chiefly from India, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar.
