The colour is a soft chalky blue tending toward teal, mottled through with paler cream and occasional darker veining, and the depth of blue varies noticeably from one piece to the next. The polish is smooth with a slightly soft quality, and the shape and hollow stay consistent across the batch while the colouring does not.

Geological Information
Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral crystallising in the orthorhombic system at Mohs 3.5 to 4, and it is one of the two common polymorphs of calcium carbonate alongside calcite: identical chemistry, different crystal structure. It occurs in white, yellow, brown, orange and blue, the colour depending on trace mineral impurities, with the blue tones here arising from that trace content rather than from any treatment. Aragonite is the mineral component of both nacre and coral, which is to say the same material that forms pearl also forms this stone. The star cluster or sputnik habit sometimes seen in specimens is a natural growth form. The mineral was first described in 1797 and takes its name from the Aragon region of Spain. Commercial material comes from Spain, Morocco, Mexico, the USA and the Czech Republic.
