Bloodstone Worry Stone cut to an oval with a thumb hollow across one face. The base is a deep opaque green, dark enough to read as near-black in shade, and scattered across it are small red flecks that range from a light dusting to dense clustering depending on where the cut fell. The polish is high and the red sits flush with the green, so the spotting is purely visual.

Bloodstone has one of the most continuous documentary records of any stone, used in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and then extensively in medieval Christian tradition, where the red spots were read as drops of blood and carved religious objects in the material became historically significant. It is traditionally carried for stamina and steadiness, and suits daily handling. The density and placement of the red is different in every piece.

Geological Information
Bloodstone, also called Heliotrope, is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, silicon dioxide crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7. Its dark green base comes from chlorite inclusions and the characteristic red spots from iron oxide, both natural mineral content rather than any treatment, and the resemblance of those spots to drops of blood against the green is what gave the stone both its names. It was worked in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, and medieval Christian tradition associated the red with the blood of Christ, producing a body of carved religious bloodstone objects of real historical significance. It should be distinguished from African Bloodstone, sold as Seftonite, which is a related but separate South African material with deeper green and more vivid spotting. Commercial material comes from India, Brazil, Australia, the USA and China.
