Geological Information
Dumortierite is an aluminium borosilicate mineral crystallising in the orthorhombic system at Mohs 7 to 8.5, which places it among the harder materials in ordinary commercial circulation, harder than quartz at its upper range. Its blue to violet-blue colouring comes from iron content. The mineral typically occurs in massive form rather than as distinct crystals, giving it a silky to vitreous lustre, and it is frequently found intergrown with quartz, with dumortierite quartz being a common retail form in its own right. No treatment or dye is applied. The mineral is named after the French palaeontologist Eugène Dumortier and carries no ancient tradition, having been described only in the modern period. Commercial material comes from Brazil, Namibia, Madagascar, France, the USA and Austria.
