Geological Information
Fossil Coral, also known as Agatized Coral, is the skeletal remains of ancient coral polyps in which the original calcium carbonate has been replaced by silica in the form of chalcedony or opal. The replacement preserves the coral's cellular structure in fine detail, which is why the florets and honeycomb cells read so clearly on a cut surface, and the material crystallises in the trigonal system as a result of that silica replacement. Colour ranges widely, from chalky white through cerise pink, chocolate brown, grey, yellow and crimson red, according to the trace elements present as the replacement took place. Because the process converts a carbonate into a silicate, the finished material carries the properties of both a fossil and an agate. The best-known deposits lie in regions once covered by ancient seas, with Michigan in the USA the classic source, where the related Petoskey Stone is the state fossil.
