Tiger Eye Worry Stone cut to a heart outline with a shallow thumb hollow worked into the upper face. The colour runs golden brown to dark honey with the fibre structure running lengthwise, and tilting the stone sends a band of silky light travelling across the face and disappearing off the edge. The polish is high and the chatoyant band is stronger on some pieces than others depending on how squarely the fibres were cut.

Tiger Eye is traditionally carried for nerve and self-possession, and Roman soldiers wore it into battle as a protective talisman, which is among the better documented ancient uses of any stone in the trade. The heart outline makes this a more obvious gift than a plain oval. Turning it to watch the light move is most of why people keep picking it up rather than leaving it in a drawer.

Geological Information
Tiger Eye is a chalcedony of the quartz family, a silicon dioxide pseudomorph after crocidolite at Mohs 7 in the trigonal system. It forms as silica gradually replaces parallel blue crocidolite fibres while preserving their alignment, and that preserved alignment produces the chatoyancy, the silky moving band known as the cat's eye effect. Crocidolite is an asbestos mineral, but the replacement is complete in finished material and the fibres are entirely substituted by silica, so the stone is safe to handle. Hawk's Eye is the blue-grey variety, where iron oxidation stopped short of the golden stage, and Red Tiger Eye is the same material carried further into oxidation. Roman soldiers wore Tiger Eye as a protective talisman, and it appears in traditional medicine across parts of Asia and Africa. South Africa is the primary source, with further material from India, Australia, the USA and Brazil.
