Fancy Jasper is a chalcedony variety within the quartz family, silicon dioxide carrying multicolour mineral inclusions, crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7. The name is a catch-all trade designation rather than a specific variety: it covers microcrystalline quartz showing a broad palette of greens, reds, purples and creams within a single stone, where the colour variation reflects several mineral traces present at once, typically iron oxide, chlorite and manganese. Because those traces distribute unevenly, no two pieces share an identical colour arrangement. No treatment or dye is applied. India is the primary commercial source, with further material from China, the USA and Madagascar, and India in particular has long lapidary traditions built around locally sourced jaspers.
