Dendritic Opal Worry Stone cut small and neat with a thumb hollow across one face. The base is a soft cream to pale grey, and across it run fine dark branching structures that spread outward from a point in the way frost spreads across glass, dense on some pieces and reduced to a few isolated filaments on others. The polish is smooth with a slightly soft quality, and the branching sits inside the stone rather than on the surface.

Geological Information
Dendritic Opal is a common opal, hydrated silica combining silicon dioxide with water, amorphous in structure at Mohs 5.5 to 6.5, in which manganese oxide has crystallised in branching tree-like patterns through a white opal matrix. Those dendrites form as manganese-bearing solutions permeate cracks in the silica gel while it is still setting, and despite looking convincingly like fossilised plants they are inorganic mineral formations with no biological origin whatsoever. Common opal lacks the play of colour of precious opal but shares the same composition, including a water content of between three and twenty-one percent by weight, which is unusual among gem materials and has direct consequences for storage. Turkey produces the primary commercial material, with further sources in the USA and Ethiopia.
