Geological Information
Opalite is a man-made opalescent glass, not a naturally occurring mineral, manufactured from dolomite and metal compounds at Mohs 5.5 to 6.5. The shifting milky white to pale blue effect is produced by light diffraction through the glass structure rather than by any mineral property, which is why the apparent colour changes so markedly with lighting and background. It is manufactured specifically to mimic the appearance of natural opal and moonstone, and is sold widely on that resemblance, but it shares neither their composition nor their formation. Production is primarily in China. There is no historical tradition behind the material; it is entirely modern, and this piece is man-made and disclosed as such.
