Infinite Serpentine Worry Stone cut to a compact oval with a thumb hollow across one face. The colour is a muted grey-green shading to olive, mottled and banded through with darker and paler zones, and some pieces carry a faint silvery sheen across the surface where the light catches. The lustre is waxy rather than glassy and the stone is noticeably soft to the touch compared with a quartz-family piece of the same size.

Geological Information
Infinite is a traditional trade name for a variety of Serpentine. Although some serpentine deposits in nature may be associated with asbestos-forming minerals, polished Infinite is widely used as an ornamental stone. Serpentine is not a single mineral but a group of related magnesium silicate hydroxide minerals, Mohs 3 to 5, crystallising in the monoclinic system, and the name refers to the stone's resemblance to snakeskin. Its green ranges from pale yellow-green to deep forest green and is frequently mottled, as here. The material is widely used as a jade substitute and is sometimes sold as jade, which it is not; Bowenite is the translucent gem variety of the group. Serpentine was worked in ancient China, Egypt and across Mesoamerica as a green stone, though Maori pounamu is nephrite rather than serpentine despite both being green. Commercial sources include New Zealand, Italy, South Africa, the USA, Afghanistan and China.
