Geological Information
Sodalite is a sodium aluminium silicate chloride crystallising in the cubic system at Mohs 5.5 to 6, and it is a feldspathoid rather than a true feldspar, a distinction that places it in a related but separate mineral family. Its blue comes from sulphur and iron impurities, and the white veining that runs through it is calcite. Sodalite is frequently confused with lapis lazuli, and the difference is straightforward: sodalite lacks the gold pyrite flecks and shows a more uniform blue broken by white veining, where lapis is a deeper blue carrying gold. Hackmanite is the tenebrescent variety, which shifts from white or grey to violet under ultraviolet light and reverts in darkness. The Princess Sodalite deposit in Ontario was named during a royal visit in 1891. Commercial material comes from Brazil, Canada, Namibia, India and Russia.
