Tiger Eye Worry Stone, a small oval with a thumb hollow across one face. The colour runs golden brown through honey to deep mahogany, and the piece carries a band of silky light that travels along the stone as it tilts, brighter or dimmer depending on how the fibres were cut. The polish is high and the chatoyant band is the first thing anyone notices.

Tiger Eye is traditionally used for nerve and self-assurance, and was worn by Roman soldiers as a protective talisman going into battle, one of the better documented ancient uses attached to any stone. It is commonly carried through demanding days or kept somewhere it will be reached for before a difficult moment. The light band is best seen by tilting the stone slowly under a single light source.

Geological Information
Tiger Eye is a chalcedony of the quartz family, a silicon dioxide pseudomorph after crocidolite at Mohs 7 in the trigonal system. It forms when silica gradually replaces parallel blue crocidolite fibres while preserving their alignment, and it is that preserved alignment that produces the chatoyancy, the silky moving band of light known as the cat's eye effect. Crocidolite is an asbestos mineral, but the replacement process is complete in finished material and the fibres are entirely substituted by silica, so the stone is safe to handle. Hawk's Eye is the blue-grey variety, where oxidation of the iron in the fibres stopped short of the golden stage. Roman soldiers carried Tiger Eye as a protective talisman, and it appears in traditional medicine across parts of Asia and Africa. South Africa is the primary source, with further material from India, Australia, the USA and Brazil.
