Black Tourmaline Worry Stone cut to an oval with a thumb hollow across one face. The colour is a solid opaque black with no variation of tone, and the surface carries fine parallel striations left by the original crystal structure, visible as faint lines catching the light at certain angles. The polish is high and the sheen shifts depending on how the striations were cut.

Black Tourmaline is the most widely used protective stone in the trade, kept by a door, carried daily, or placed where a boundary is wanted. It is traditionally associated with holding that boundary and with settling after contact with something draining. The striations make each piece slightly different in how it catches light, which is otherwise easy to miss in a stone this uniformly dark.

Geological Information
Black Tourmaline, formally Schorl, is an iron sodium borosilicate of the tourmaline group, crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7 to 7.5. Its black comes from high iron content, and schorl is by a wide margin the most abundant tourmaline variety, found globally in granites, pegmatites and metamorphic rocks. The mineral has strong piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties: rubbed or heated, tourmaline develops an electrical charge and will visibly attract dust and small paper fragments, which is a demonstrable physical property rather than an attributed one. That behaviour saw it used in scientific instruments from the eighteenth century onward. No treatment is involved. Commercial material comes from Brazil, the USA, Africa, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
