African Turquoise Worry Stone - 1.5-1.75 inch

African Turquoise Worry Stone cut to a smooth oval with a thumb hollow across one face. The colour is a soft teal to blue-green, broken throughout by a webbing of brown and black matrix that runs heavier on some pieces than others and occasionally takes over a whole face. The polish is high and the matrix lines sit flush with the surface, so the webbing reads visually without being felt.

African Turquoise is traditionally associated with change and with clear speech, carrying the same broad associations attached to true turquoise despite being a different mineral entirely. It is commonly held before a conversation someone is dreading, carried through a period of transition, or kept where it will be picked up daily. Geological Information
African Turquoise is a trade name for a blue-green chalcedony of the quartz family, silicon dioxide with trace copper and iron, crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7. It is not true turquoise: genuine turquoise is a copper aluminium phosphate, a different chemistry entirely, and this material contains none of it. It is also not chrysocolla, another copper mineral sometimes confused with it. The teal to blue-green colouring comes from copper and iron traces within the silica matrix, and the brown or black webbing is host-rock matrix retained through cutting rather than added. At Mohs 7 it is considerably harder than true turquoise and needs none of the stabilisation that porous turquoise usually requires. South Africa is the primary source, with further material from Zimbabwe.
