Geological Information
Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar (Mohs 6-6.5, triclinic) with a grey to dark grey base and spectacular multicolour iridescence in blues, greens, and golds, more rarely red and violet. This effect, called labradorescence, is caused by light interference between thin lamellar layers within the feldspar structure. It is untreated natural material. It was named after Labrador, Canada, where it was first described by Europeans in 1770, though the Inuit had known it for centuries; note that Rainbow Moonstone is a trade name for white labradorite and is labradorite, not moonstone. It is sourced from Canada, Madagascar, Finland, Russia, and Mexico.
