Larvikite is an igneous rock, an augite syenite (Mohs 6-6.5), whose distinctive silver-blue schiller is produced by light interference in layered feldspar crystals within the rock matrix. It is untreated natural material. Although it is commonly sold as Black Labradorite, and also called Norwegian Moonstone or Blue Pearl Granite in architectural contexts, none of these names is mineralogically accurate; it is larvikite, not labradorite or moonstone. It is widely used as an architectural stone worldwide, seen in building facades and countertops, and is named after Larvik, Norway. Genuine material comes exclusively from the Larvik region of Norway.
