Iolite is the gem variety of cordierite, a magnesium aluminium silicate with an orthorhombic structure and a Mohs hardness of 7-7.5. It is among the most strongly pleochroic minerals known, showing blue-violet, yellow-grey, and near-colourless along different crystal axes, and this optical behaviour is the stone's key identifier as well as its main selling point. The blue-violet to grey-blue body colour is intrinsic to the mineral rather than the result of any treatment. The name comes from the Greek ios, meaning violet. Iolite's polarising property is what allowed Viking navigators to use it as a solar compass, one of the best-documented historical applications of a gemstone.
