Serpentine is not a single mineral but a group of related magnesium silicate hydroxide minerals, with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 5 and a monoclinic crystal system, occurring in green from pale yellow-green to deep forest green and often mottled in a way that recalls snakeskin, which gives the group its name. It is frequently used as a jade substitute and is sometimes sold as jade, a misrepresentation the trade should avoid, and Bowenite is its translucent gem variety. One serpentine mineral, chrysotile, is a form of asbestos, so serpentine from chrysotile-bearing sources should be confirmed as non-fibrous before retail.
