Milky Quartz is silicon dioxide of the quartz family, trigonal in system at a Mohs hardness of 7, and it is the most abundant quartz variety on Earth. The white opacity comes from microscopic fluid and gas inclusions trapped within the crystal structure during growth; these scatter light in much the same way fog does, producing the characteristic milky appearance rather than the transparency of clear quartz. Those inclusions form when the crystal grows faster than impurities can be expelled from the structure, so the cloudiness is a record of growth rate. The material is natural and requires no treatment. White quartz in massive habit has been worked across human cultures since prehistory, and white quartz pebbles and stones appear in archaeological contexts globally as ritual objects.
