Geological Information
Black Tourmaline, properly schorl, is an iron sodium borosilicate of the tourmaline group, trigonal in structure and rating 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale. Its black colour comes from high iron content, and schorl is by a wide margin the most abundant tourmaline variety, found in granites, pegmatites, and metamorphic rocks worldwide. The mineral is strongly piezoelectric and pyroelectric: rubbed or heated, it develops an electric charge and visibly attracts dust and small particles, a property that saw it used in scientific instruments from the eighteenth century onward. Sodalite is a sodium aluminium silicate chloride, cubic and rating 5.5-6, a feldspathoid rather than a true feldspar, taking its blue from sulphur and iron impurities and its white veining from calcite inclusions. Black Tourmaline is worked in Brazil, the USA, Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan; Sodalite in Brazil, Canada, Namibia, India, and Russia. This piece was assembled in India.
